　現地時間2017年10月2日、トム・ペティが死去したことが明らかになった。66歳だった。

　トム・ペティのマネージャーによると、2日早朝に心臓発作を起こし、米カリフォルニア州のマリブの自宅からUCLA医療センターへ搬送され、午後8時40分に息を引き取った。

　この日、午前10時52分頃、マリブの住宅で心臓発作を起こした男性に関する通報に応じた救急隊員らが蘇生に成功したものの危篤状態だったと、そのとき関係当局がハリウッド・リポーター誌に話していた。

　マネージャーによる声明には、「トム・ペティの遺族に代わり、父親、夫、兄弟、リーダー、そして友人であったトム・ペティの早過ぎる死を、失意と共に発表します」という言葉とともに、「彼は、家族、バンド・メンバーや友人らに囲まれて安らかに亡くなった」と綴られている。
